Afterschool STEAM Mentor

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) Mentors are caring, creative, energetic, responsible, tech-savvy, leaders passionate about children, education and community development. As mentors, instructors, and positive role-models supporting children to have fun learning how to create and innovate with today’s technology in community-based, maker education environments we are looking for someone to demonstrate exceptional teamwork skills and take initiative to build a memorable experience for youth.


Role & responsibilities includes:


  • Learning about innovation, technology and entrepreneurship to engage and inspire children and foster their social and educational development: communication, creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving, collaboration and digital skills.

  • Learning how to effectively support children’s social, emotional, and educational development through hands-on, experiential, STEAM-based, maker education, in collaboration with community partners.

  • Under the direction of the Supervisor, and working closely with Program Directors, Program Specialists, volunteers, and partner organization staff, supporting the delivery of youth-focused, STEAM-based activities to youth.

  • Engaging, inspiring, mentoring, leading and teaching children innovation, technology and an entrepreneurial mindset.

  • Teaching children and youth how to code and developing their digital skills, using 3D printing, computer-aided animation and design, digital audio and video recording and editing, robotics, wearable technology, virtual reality, etc.

  • Learning about and working with a variety of technologies and tools.

  • Navigating complex situations/people dynamics; engaging/motivating people; and building strong connections/relationships to inspire youth.

  • Thriving in an informal, peer-led, shared learning environment driven by fun, exploration and self-fulfillment/empowerment.

  • Supporting the achievement of program goals/outcomes.

  • Working with Supervisors to collect daily attendance, data, etc.

  • Other relevant duties as required.


The afterschool STEAM Mentor position is a part-time position requiring availability for lunch and/or afterschool programs. Hours will range from 8-16 hours/week for 21 weeks. 



  • Studying early childhood education, social work, computer science, IT, technology or programming, engineering, science, social studies, or marketing and communications. We will provide training on how to use equipment, but you must have an interest in working with technology, youth, and making cool things. 

  • Experience working with children and youth.

  • Experience managing and/or facilitating projects/programs.

  • Professional, responsible, and flexible attitude with staff, volunteers, supporters, and youth participants.

  • Excellent communication skills. Comfortable leading a small group activity with youth. 

  • Highly creative self-starter, with an ability to engage with people from all walks of life. 

  • A keen attention to detail and high standards for the work you produce.

  • Ability to manage projects and people, and multi-task to meet competing deadlines.

  • Demonstrated capacity to work effectively in a diverse work environment.

  • High computer proficiency with google drive and google apps (sheets, docs, slides), e-mail, social media platforms, and internet research.

  • Ability to actively provide feedback and opinions to solve problems and take leadership of a project.

  • Team player who is happy to pitch-in and help out as required.
